The Legend of the Cycad

Approximately two hundred million years ago, God breathed life onto the first seed of the cycadophyta. As it uncoiled its hardy, dark green, spiky leaves, God marveled at His creation. This was a true reflection of perfection and deserving of being ruler of the flora kingdom. God commanded the cycad to populate the world, guaranteeing its survival.

"You will bear testimony to prehistoric life and carry the message of the ages. Those who take the time to explore you, will have no doubt of My hand in Creation."

"You will often be mistaken for your more common counterparts, the palm and the fern. However, on close inspection you will be distinguished and treasured."

"You will be coveted by many and in their quest to own you, will in 100 years achieve what 200 million years of natural disasters will not be able to achieve. You will become endangered, but never extinct, as I will protect you."

The little plant looked up at God and questioned its own capabilities and God said: "I have given you all the characteristics necessary for this to come to pass. You are a survivor with a winning attitude. Your roots are well grounded and steadfast. Climates will change and conditions will become undesirable, but you will adapt accordingly, never losing sight of the honour bestowed upon you."

Comforted by these words, out of the heart of its being, the cycad produced a fruitful cone, prepared to own its destiny.
